| The following are a few important things to consider when putting together your resume: |
Avoid the Cookie Cutter |
| |
As simple as they are to produce, a boiler plate resume may mean that yours simply blends into the background. Avoid over used comments like "Seeking a challenging position that offers professional growth". Instead, be more specific like; "A challenging entry-level estimating position that allows me to continue developing the skills I learned while earning my vocational school degree".
Your resume should radiate professionalism while at the same time it must stand out in a crowd of other resumes. Whenever possible, write a resume for a specific employer by clearly indicating how and why you’re a good fit for their organization as well as the position.
| |
Don’t Rely on Spell Check! |
| |
The spelling and grammar in your resume needs to be perfect. Do not rely on your computers spell checker. After you have written it, print a copy, check it over thoroughly, rewrite it, print another copy and have someone else check it. It doesn’t matter how qualified you are for a position, if your resume isn’t perfect; you probably won’t get the chance of an interview.
| |
Always Be Clear & Concise |
| |
Employers need to clearly understand your accomplishments within as few words as possible. Don’t use two paragraphs if you can get your message across in two sentences.
Conversely, avoid being too brief or vague with comments such as: “Worked with employees in a body shop sales situation” as this says nothing about what you can do. Instead try, “Trained and supervised three estimators and two customer service representatives in a collision center with revenues of $6 million per annum.”
| |
Always Be Complete |
| |
In smaller communities in particular, body shop owners know one another and talk more regularly than you think. Don’t be tempted to leave a job off your resume because you didn’t get on with your boss or didn’t leave under the best of terms. It never looks good when you’re found out so you are better off mentioning it and having a chance to give your side of the story.
If you have recently graduated from high school or college and have limited work experience, don’t be afraid to mention the part time jobs you've had to earn extra money. They can show a potential employer that you've gained useful work ethic, time management or maybe customer service skills.

Always Be Correct |
| |
Always ensure the details in your resume are correct, and that dates, time lines, experience, diplomas, certifications, etc; will stand up under scrutiny. Double check your contact information! There is nothing worse than waiting for that phone call that never comes because of a typo on your resume.
